Synopsis of play
One of American Literature's most loved novels, Little Women is a story of family, of hope, of dreams, and chronicles the joys and sorrows of the four devoted March sisters as they grow into young ladies, search for romance, and find maturity in Civil War era 19th century New England. Meet the March sisters: the talented and tomboyish Jo, the beautiful Meg, the frail Beth, and the spoiled Amy, as they pass through the years between girlhood and womanhood. A lively portrait of growing up, with lasting vitality and enduring charm. The novel was published in 1868, and was written by Louisa May Alcott.
About the playwright
In 1911, Ms. de Forest wrote her first serious play, Little Women , a dramatization of Louisa May Alcott's famous novel of the same name, and become the first significant playwright in Buffalo. The play was performed for the first time in the Teck Theater in January 1912 - an immediate success - and opened in New York at the Playhouse in October 1912. On 10 November 1919, the play opened at the New Theater in London, with Katherine Cornell starring.
Ms. de Forest traveled with the company to New York, London, and Paris, not only as author, but also as publisher, and director. Little Women opened again in New York in 1931, and in Buffalo by at least four professional companies, and continues playing today.
