In Agatha Christie’s classic whodunit The Mousetrap, a snowstorm traps a disparate group of individuals in a remote English guesthouse. Each character harbors distinct motives and dark secrets connected to a tragic past.
The main characters, approximate ages and their descriptions are:
- Mollie Ralston (20-30 yrs.): The young, eager, and somewhat inexperienced owner of Monkswell Manor. She has recently converted her inherited home into a guesthouse and carries a hidden burden regarding a past tragedy.
- Giles Ralston (25-35 yrs) Mollie’s husband of one year. He is initially skeptical, somewhat boorish, and highly judgmental of the guests, leading to tension when he clashes with men paying attention to his wife.
- Christopher Wren (early 20's): A hyperactive, neurotic, and eccentric young man who claims to be an architect. He is flighty, erratic, and immediately casts suspicion on himself.
- Mrs. Boyle (60-70 yrs): A pompous, demanding, and unsympathetic older woman. As a former court magistrate, she is highly critical of the inn and its management, quickly making herself the most disliked person in the house.
- Major Metcalf (40-60 yrs): A square-shouldered, polite, and jovial retired British military officer. He is an unassuming guest who generally serves to calm the tempers of the other residents.
- Miss Casewell (30-45 yrs): An aloof, masculine-acting woman with an authoritative demeanor. She is notably secretive about her past and cryptically hints at a harsh childhood.
- Mr. Paravicini (30-50 yrs): An unexpected guest who arrives after his car overturns in a snowdrift. He is a mysterious foreigner, suspected of wearing artificial makeup to appear older, and affects an enigmatic, dramatic accent.
- Detective Sergeant Trotter (30-45 yrs): The cheerful, commonplace police detective who arrives at the guest house on skis to investigate a local murder and warn the group. He acts as an investigator trying to connect the guests to past events.
